Overview
Experience the Grand Canyon the way early explorers did—aboard a classic Hard Hulled in this 14 or 16-day dory trip. Inspired by Major John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition, these sleek, rigid boats offer an exhilarating, responsive ride that honors river-running tradition.
Pioneered in the canyon by legendary boatman Martin Litton in the 1960s, dories combine the grace of historic craftsmanship with the thrill of whitewater adventure. Feel every riffle, surge over towering waves, and connect with the river in a way only a dory allows.
Book your journey and ride the rapids like the legends of the past!

Is This Trip Right for You?
Our Grand Canyon expeditions are designed for adventurers who are in good physical health and ready for a bit of challenge. You should be able to walk on rough terrain, manage light gear (about 20-25 lbs), and handle a 3-foot step to get on and off the boat. Age recommendations are 8+ for motorized trips and 12+ for dory trips. Whether you're a family, solo traveler, or seasoned adventurer, our guides will ensure a safe and memorable experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 14-Day Rowing Expedition trip, and what is a dory?
The 14-Day Rowing Expedition is a challenging and immersive journey through the Grand Canyon, where you’ll navigate the Colorado River in traditional dory boats—small, sturdy, open boats designed for river travel. This expedition is perfect for those seeking an authentic, hands-on adventure with plenty of opportunities to explore the Canyon’s natural beauty, history, and geology.
Do I need previous rowing experience to join this trip?
No prior rowing experience is required. Our expert guides will provide training on the basics of rowing, and you'll have the opportunity to row alongside experienced boatmen. While the trip does require some physical effort, our guides ensure that everyone feels confident and supported along the way.
How physically demanding is the 14-Day Rowing Expedition?
The 14-Day Rowing Expedition is physically demanding but designed for those in good health who enjoy a challenge. You'll spend long days on the river, rowing, hiking, and setting up camp. However, our guides pace the trip appropriately, and there will be rest periods along the way. If you're comfortable with moderate physical activity, you'll be able to handle it.
What will I experience during the trip?
This expedition offers a truly immersive Grand Canyon experience. You’ll experience thrilling whitewater rapids, quiet stretches of the Colorado River, stunning hikes to hidden waterfalls, and learn about the Canyon’s geology and Native American history from expert guides. The trip is designed to fully engage your sense of adventure and curiosity.
What kind of meals can I expect during the trip?
Expect gourmet, fresh meals prepared by our talented river cooks. From hearty breakfasts to delicious dinners, you'll enjoy meals like steaks, pasta, and fresh fish, as well as snacks and desserts. Our guides ensure that even in the remote Canyon, you’ll eat well and stay energized.
What do I need to bring for the trip?
We provide all the necessary camping and rowing gear, but we recommend bringing personal items like lightweight clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, sunscreen, and a camera. A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable trip.
How will we manage personal hygiene during the trip?
While the trip is rustic, we ensure basic hygiene needs are met. The "groover" (a portable toilet) is available at designated campsites, and there are opportunities for quick freshwater rinses during the trip. Our guides will provide instructions and ensure that everyone is comfortable with the process.
What if I have concerns about the cost of the trip?
While the 14-Day Rowing Expedition is a premium adventure, it offers exceptional value. From expert guides and high-quality gear to gourmet meals and a fully immersive Grand Canyon experience, this trip provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that is well worth the investment. Many past guests say the trip exceeded their expectations and was truly unforgettable.
Can I rent a dory boat for a Grand Canyon river trip?
No. Dory trips through the Grand Canyon are fully guided and not available as boat rentals. These expeditions are led by trained guides who handle rowing, navigation, camp setup, and safety throughout the journey.
How do I book a 14 or 16-day Grand Canyon dory trip online?
You can review available dates, choose your preferred trip length, and complete your booking directly on our website. After reserving your spot, you’ll receive a confirmation email with helpful trip details and preparation tips.
How much does a 14 or 16-day Grand Canyon dory trip cost?
Prices usually start around $5,100. The final cost depends on the departure date and trip length. The fare includes meals, camping gear, guides, all river equipment, round-trip transportation, and lodging at our preferred hotel partner the night before and after your trip.
Do I need travel or trip cancellation insurance for this trip?
Insurance is optional but strongly recommended. Because these trips are planned far in advance and cancellations within 120 days are non-refundable, travel insurance helps protect your reservation in case plans change.
How can I compare different outfitters that offer Grand Canyon dory trips?
Look at customer reviews, years in operation, what each company includes in its package, and how long you’ll be on the river. You can also compare group sizes, guide experience, and the type of boats used. These details help you find the right fit for your trip.
